This is the medical field Dr Swan Kang is truly passionate about—using digital innovation to improve access, empower patients, and make healthcare more inclusive.
Tackling Digital Exclusion: Transforming Lives Through Access and Inclusion
Dr Swan Kang leads an award-winning initiative at Moorfields Eye Hospital aimed at addressing digital exclusion — a major barrier preventing many vulnerable patients from accessing essential care and opportunities.
Through the Digital Recycling & Gifting Programme, donated and refurbished devices such as laptops and smartphones are distributed to patients who lack the digital tools or skills needed to engage with modern healthcare, education, or employment. The project also includes digital skills training through partnerships with Friends of Moorfields and the RNIB.
The programme has had a life-changing impact on patients’ lives. Many individuals facing barriers—such as lack of access to digital devices—have been able to overcome challenges in education and employment through donated technology and personalised support. With the right resources, they have successfully achieved their goals and rebuilt their lives.
To date, the project has:
Collected and repurposed over 30 devices
Delivered support to 30 patients across multiple sites
Trained a team of volunteers to provide digital coaching
This initiative highlights the direct impact of digital inclusion on patient independence, dignity, and opportunity, particularly for those who are visually impaired, socially isolated, or economically disadvantaged. By removing barriers to technology, Dr Swan Kang’s work is not only improving access to care — it’s transforming lives.
